JSP 375 Vol 2
MoD Health & Safety Handbook
10.1
Introducing control measures to ensure that the lead in air in the breathing zone does not
exceed the appropriate occupational exposure limit (OEL), see leaflet on Control of Hazardous
Substances; and
10.2
Carrying out a regular programme of air monitoring (4 times per year, though may reduce
to once per year on advice from occupational or environmental health specialists) to check that
control measures are working effectively and the OEL is not exceeded. Specialist advice from in
house occupational or environmental health specialists must be sought in this area.
11 Detailed requirements are given in the HSC Approved Code of Practice
Personal Protective Equipment
12 In cases where engineering control measures are inappropriate e.g. maintenance work, a high
standard of PPE is required. If the OEL is likely to be exceeded suitable RPE must be provided, see
chapter on PPE.
Ensure High Standards of Hygiene
13 A high standard of personal hygiene plays a crucial role in controlling lead absorption. Therefore
the line manager must ensure that employees do not eat, drink or smoke in any place that is `liable to
be' contaminated by lead. Suitable and sufficient washing facilities, including showers, where
appropriate, are required by WHSW.
Health surveillance
14 Instigate medical (health) surveillance if exposure is significant. See leaflet on Medical
Surveillance.
Information, instruction and training
15 Provide Employees with Information, Instruction and Training. The line manager must provide
suitable information, instruction and training which is to include:
15.1
The extent to which employees are exposed to lead;
15.2
What steps the unit/station/ship is taking to adequately control exposure; and
15.3
What precautions employees need to take.
16 Further information may be obtained, via local Health and Safety Advisor, or from in house
occupational or environmental health specialists.
EMPLOYEE'S DUTIES
Personal Hygiene
17 Employees are not to eat, drink or smoke in any place which they have reason to believe to be
