HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND HAZARD INFORMATION
WHAT ARE THE CHIP REGULATIONS AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
1
The series of Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations is known for
short as CHIP. Their aim is to help protect people and the environment from the ill effects of chemicals
that is, both single substances and mixtures of substances (preparations) by requiring suppliers to
provide information about their properties and ensuring they are packaged safely. If users know about
the chemicals and how to control them, they are less likely to do things with them that will harm
themselves, other people or the environment.
2
CHIP requires suppliers to:
2.1 Identify the hazards (or dangers) of the chemicals they supply this is called classification;
2.2 Give information about the hazards to the people they supply chemicals to; and
2.3 Package the chemicals safely. These requirements are called supply requirements .
