diabetic catalog and organization of the 8

National Diabetic Day in November 2002.
On the 26
th
of June, Tukalevskaya met A. G. Zhevzhikov, a Deputy Editor of Chief of journal
Kazakhstan America to consider further journal publications concerning American support of
DARK's activity.
DARK distributed the following data to its regional societies:
International
Diabetic
Federation (IDF) data on its 18
th
Congress;
Information on DARK's work in publication of the official diabetic catalog;
Periodical bulletins on DARK's activity;
Reply of Novo Nordisk to the DARK's request to provide a charitable support in form
of syringes. (The company allotted 500 Novo Pen 3 syringes to be distributed to
Kazakhstan's regions).

DARK received humanitarian aid including medicines in amount of KZT 1,107,267 ($7,237).
4. Young Leaders Association (YLA)
Activity Overview
On April 4 6, training on ecological education was conducted for elementary schoolchildren of
four Shymkent schools. In addition, the ecological contest of drawings The Earth of Love was
carried out jointly with Oblast Department of Education and South Kazakhstan Association of
Young Leaders for city schools. On April 14, the Association conducted a discussion workshop
on current school issues of Shymkent and Taraz regions.
Ecological training program resulted in organization of a number of actions The Earth Day ,
conducted by the Association's regional branches.
263 representatives of 23 cities of Kazakhstan, members of the regional branches participated in
conference on leadership program, held in April 30 May 5. New designs on action plan, conflict
resolution, meeting organization skills and art of facilitation were developed during the
conference.
In May 5 10, children's forum and Special Session of the UN General Assembly dedicated to
children were held in New York, USA. It has to be noted that for the first time in 57 years of UN
activity, children from all parts of the world, including representatives of the Association
Veronica Braterskaya and Zhangir Kainazarov, participated in the session.
Internal Capacity Building
On April 1 3, training on the regional staff development was carried out for 35 members and
volunteers of Shymkent branch. The training covered the issues of social organizations and their
partnership with state bodies and businesses. As a result of the training, an action plan, structural
scheme were developed for the Shymkent branch.
Staff Development workshop was conducted in April 11 13 in Taraz and resulted in the
organizational action plan design for the Taraz branch of the Association.
In the framework of Students' Action Committees project, the Association in partnership with
IFES organized Democracy camp for 80 school children of South Kazakhstan. The NGO plans
to carry out next camp in Ust Kamenogorsk.
