Section 8   Training

n 

attend and complete successfully MOD approved Authorised Person 

(Confined Spaces) refresher training courses at intervals not 

exceeding three years 

n 

be trained as appointed persons for the administration of Emergency 

First Aid under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations and be 

regularly retrained in Emergency First Aid to comply with these 

Regulations 

n 

undertake a period of familiarisation training under the supervision of 

a suitably experienced Authorised Person or the Authorising 

Engineer to gain knowledge of the practical application of these 

Safety Rules and Procedures and the confined spaces in the area of 

responsibility 

n 

undertake a period of on site training under the supervision of a 

suitably experienced Authorised Person or the Authorising Engineer 

and demonstrate aptitude before acting independently as Authorised 

Person. 

8.2.2  

Familiarisation training is to include: 

n 

the duties associated with the operation and implementation of these 

Safety Rules and Procedures, any agreed local variations, and any 

relevant rules, procedures or instructions issued by the Commanding 

Officer or Head of Establishment (see CER) 

n 

the location and layout of the confined spaces, Document Cabinet, 

Keys and arrangements for obtaining access to them 

n 

experience on the control of work in confined spaces 

n 

the location and use of all appropriate safety equipment and safety 

signs and arrangements for obtaining access to them 

n 

safety measures to be taken to reduce risks associated with confined 

space working 

n 

the arrangements for liaison with the Commanding Officer or Head of 

Establishment (see CER), Authorised Persons (Petroleum), 

Authorised Persons (Boilers and Pressure Systems), Authorised 

Persons (Electrical), Hazardous Area Managers and others. 

8.2.3  

On site training consists of monitored practical application of these Safety 

Rules and Procedures under the supervision of a suitably experienced 

Authorised Person or the Authorising Engineer. 

8.2.4  

During the training period the trainee is to keep a record which details: 

n 

the training received 

n 

experience gained 

n 

observations made 

n 

actions taken 

n 

the trainer's comments and recommendations.
